I AM FREQUENTLY ASKED IF YOU NEED TO DO MATHS AND PHYSICS FOR YEAR 12.

THE ANSWER IS NO.

THERE ARE NO PREREQUISITE SUBJECTS FOR USYD.

UNFORTUNATELY THIS IS NOT MADE TERRIBLY CLEAR, SO I MEET A LOT OF SCHOOL KIDS WHO ARE DISTRESSED BY THE THOUGHT OF DOING PHYSICS AND MATHS FOR THE HSC. 

I DID NEITHER OF THESE THINGS AND I AM A-OK, I MEAN I SUCK AT MATHS BUT THAT’S WHAT CALCULATORS ARE FOR, SUFFERING THROUGH AN EXTRA TWO YEARS OF QUADRATICS AND CALCULUS WOULD NOT HAVE MADE ME BETTER AT MENTAL DOSE RATES.

I WILL HOWEVER SAY THAT YOU SHOULD STICK AT CHEMISTRY, BECAUSE THE FIRST SEMESTER HAS A REALLY INTENSIVE CHEM COURSE.  BUT YOU DON’T NEED PHYSICS UNTIL FOURTH YEAR AND IT’S NOT A LOT.

IF EITHER OF THESE SUBJECTS STRESSES OR DISTRESSES YOU OR YOU HATE THEM OR YOU THINK THEY WILL DRAG YOUR MARK DOWN YOU SHOULD DROP THEM AND DO SOMETHING AWESOME AND FUN (like SOR II hahaha I love religion).

This post is brought to you by CAPSLOCK because I would really like people to find it when they google “do I need maths/physics to study veterinary science at University of Sydney”, because apparently it’s really hard to find out that the answer is no.

You can be an awesome vet without being good at year 12 maths (I hope haha).

Alright, so I got cornered yesterday by two vets and a tech and they told me I need to apply to vet school this year.  I know some are you currently in vet school and I have a question for you.  What was one of the memorable questions they asked you during your interview?

1. What you would do  if you did not get in?
2.  What will you do to avoid burnout?
3. An owner brings in a young healthy dog and wants you to euthanize it because they will be moving out of the state.  What do you do?
4. What part will you play in the community?
5. How do you manage your time?
6.  It sounds like most of your experience is ________, yet vet school curriculum is primarily focused on ___________ related skills (small and large animal anatomy, physiology, and veterinary practices).  How do you know that this is the right thing for you?  Do you see this as a problem?
7. How do you feel about spay clinics?  Vaccine clinics?  Would you participate in them?  What if you worked for a vet that demanded your participation?
8. What do you do to blow off steam? 
9. How will you deal with people on the other side of the animal rights issue?
10. How do you react if you become aware that another vet has made a serious medical mistake or has practiced sloppy medicine on one of your clients? 

some of these are all trick questions in the sense that the obvious clear answer isnt always the best answer. the panel uses questions like these to test your rationale. As a doctor(and a student) they want to see how you do straddling the fence of emotional and logical.

Like the ethical problem of putting down a healthy animal. you make WANT to say

“No i will not put down any health animal.”

Too emotional. BUT saying

although i’m against its the owners prerogative

Too cold. the more correct answer would be

“I would let the owner know of all available options performed at my clinic and options that other clinics in the area perform.” 

the other questions i put are to test your “stress maintenance” so just tell them you know a guy that can get you some xanes…
